We started camping as kids, but didn't really get serious until our 8-year old and his dad joined our local YMCA Guide (formerly Indian Guides and Indian Princesses) program. This particular group tries to get fathers more involved with their kids through camping and other activities with kids and their fathers. There are other community, church, school and similar groups that organize camping trips. These are a good way to get started if you're unsure or don't want to take the time to do it yourself.
